The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
