A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Trading information shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
However the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other platform users also made large payouts from similar wagers.
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
A bill introduced on recently would prevent federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.
Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
The industry were examined under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
